SUBJECT: Peacock Spring Sports & COVID-19 Update

Upper Iowa University is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, but also has affiliate membership in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer and the Great Lakes Valley Conference for women’s bowling.

Following yesterday’s announcement from the NCAA President and Board of Governors that all winter and spring championships in all sports and all divisions have been canceled, both the NSIC and GLIAC have released statements regarding athletic related activities moving forward.

NSIC Statement

Based on the latest developments and the continued spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has announced the suspension of all athletic activities for each of its 16-member institutions. All NSIC contests are suspended immediately, while any non-conference competitions already travelled to are left to institutional discretion up to March 16, at which time all athletic activities must cease.

The league will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and will make a determination on the remainder of the academic year later this month.

GLIAC Statement

Effective immediately, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in consultation with the Council of Presidents and athletic directors, has canceled all athletically-related activity through May 31, 2020. During this unprecedented world-wide fight against the COVID-19 threat, the GLIAC supports national and NCAA efforts to protect student-athletes, coaches, fans and communities.

Based on the statements above the women’s lacrosse 2020 season has been suspended and will not resume this spring. The baseball, softball, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s outdoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field seasons are also suspended at this time.

The women’s bowling team at Upper Iowa has withdrawn from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, which is still scheduled for Mar. 20-22, which ends their first season of competition.

The NCAA and our conferences will be working closely together over the next few weeks to identify all the questions related to eligibility, scholarship limits, academic requirements and much more. The administration and coaches of the Upper Iowa athletics department ask for your patience as we work with the NCAA and conferences to find solutions in the best interest of our student-athletes. We support the difficult decisions that were made by the governing bodies. We know that as an athletics department, we must do our part to keep the University, the city of Fayette and the community of Fayette County as healthy and safe as possible.
